Combining Natural Swimming Ponds and Cart Lodge Saunas
A Natural Swimming Pond and Sauna Designed for Wellbeing
What if your garden could become a place to swim, bathe, restore and reconnect with nature throughout the year?
At Seed Original, we design and create Wild Bathing Gardens that combine natural swimming ponds, Our Cart Lodge saunas, wildlife-friendly planting and landscape design into a single immersive outdoor experience. Inspired by the rural landscapes of Kent and Sussex, these spaces are designed to feel rooted in their surroundings while providing a place for wellbeing, relaxation and year-round outdoor living.
More than a swimming pool and more than a sauna, a Wild Bathing Garden is a complete landscape designed around water, nature and the simple ritual of hot and cold bathing.
Why Combine a Sauna with a Natural Swimming Pond?
For centuries, people have combined heat and cold as part of a restorative bathing ritual. The contrast between a sauna and cool natural water provides a powerful sensory experience that encourages relaxation, recovery and a connection to the seasons.
Unlike conventional swimming pools, natural swimming ponds use biological filtration and aquatic planting to maintain water quality. The result is living water that supports wildlife while providing a beautiful place to swim.
The combination of a sauna and natural swimming pond creates a unique outdoor wellness space that can be enjoyed throughout the year.
The Cart Lodge Sauna
At the heart of many Wild Bathing Gardens sits the Cart Lodge Sauna.
Inspired by the traditional agricultural buildings of Kent and Sussex, the Cart Lodge Sauna combines a handcrafted sauna with an open cart lodge beneath a simple tiled roof. Constructed from ancient oak, reclaimed timbers and naturally weathering materials, it settles quietly into the landscape and feels entirely at home beside listed buildings, period properties and rural gardens.
One half provides a warm and sheltered sauna experience, while the adjoining open lodge creates space for changing, resting, gathering firewood and enjoying views across the garden.
Natural Swimming Ponds Designed for Wildlife
A natural swimming pond offers far more than a place to swim.
Carefully designed regeneration zones support aquatic planting that helps filter and cleanse the water naturally. Marginal plants create habitat for dragonflies, amphibians, birds and pollinators, transforming the pond into a living part of the garden ecosystem.
Rather than separating people from nature, a natural swimming pond encourages a closer relationship with the landscape.
The result is a garden that is alive with movement, wildlife and seasonal change.
Creating a Wild Bathing Garden
Every Wild Bathing Garden is unique.
Some are positioned within the grounds of listed buildings and country houses. Others form part of contemporary garden retreats or rural renovation projects.
Typical elements may include:
• Natural swimming ponds
• Wood-fired / Electric saunas
• Outdoor showers
• Wildflower meadows
• Orchard planting
• Topiary and structural planting
• Wildlife habitats
• Seating and gathering spaces
A Garden for Every Season
One of the most rewarding aspects of a Wild Bathing Garden is the way it changes throughout the year.
Spring brings blossom, fresh growth and returning wildlife. Summer invites swimming and long evenings outdoors. Autumn fills the landscape with seed heads, warm colours and reflections across the water. Winter introduces frost, mist and the simple pleasure of stepping from a wood-fired sauna into cool fresh air.
Designing Wild Bathing Gardens in Kent and Sussex
Seed Original designs and creates bespoke Wild Bathing Gardens throughout Kent, Sussex and the South East.
Combining landscape design, natural swimming ponds, wood-fired saunas and traditional craftsmanship, we create outdoor wellness spaces that feel connected to both the landscape and the people who use them.
Whether centred around a Cart Lodge Sauna, a natural swimming pond or a complete bathing landscape, our aim is always the same:
To create places that make room for life.
Plant a Seed Original Meadow garden.
A meadow is one of the simplest and most rewarding ways to transform a garden.
Far more than an area of long grass, a carefully designed meadow introduces movement, seasonal interest and a rich habitat for pollinators, birds and other wildlife. It changes through the year, responding to weather, light and the rhythm of the seasons, creating landscapes that feel alive and deeply connected to their surroundings.
At Seed Original, we believe the most successful gardens combine structure and freedom.
The clipped form of a yew hedge. The silhouette of a topiary mound. The shelter of a cart shed or orchard tree. Set against the relaxed beauty of grasses, wildflowers and natural planting, these elements create landscapes that feel both timeless and contemporary.
A meadow does not need acres of land.
Even relatively modest gardens can benefit from areas of naturalistic planting. Whether beneath fruit trees, around a garden building, alongside a swimming pond or simply as an alternative to traditional lawn, meadow planting can bring texture, biodiversity and beauty to spaces of every size.
Our approach begins with understanding the character of the site.
Soil conditions, sunlight, drainage and existing vegetation all influence the planting palette. We select grasses and flowering species that suit both the garden and its setting, creating meadows that establish successfully and mature gracefully over time.
The result is not a garden that demands constant attention, but one that evolves naturally throughout the year.
Spring bulbs emerging through fresh grass. Summer flowers alive with bees and butterflies. Seed heads catching autumn light. Frost settling across winter silhouettes.
A meadow invites people to slow down and notice these moments.
It reconnects gardens with the wider landscape and creates places that feel more generous, more natural and more resilient.
At Seed Original, we design landscapes that make room for life.
And sometimes the most powerful transformation begins by simply planting a meadow.
